How Can Agriculture Waste Be Reduced?

Agricultural waste can’t be avoided entirely, but it can be minimized with some effort. As a farmer, if you pay close attention to your waste, some items can be reused instead of thrown out. There are many different types of farming, and it will depend on which type you do to determine the things you can repurpose. Let’s discuss some of the most common ways agricultural waste can be reduced.

Recycle

A large number of items that are used on farms can be recycled. The landfills are filling up more and more every day. You can do your part and help the environment with the enormous amounts of waste by recycling what you can. Some of the items that can be recycled are:

  • Cardboard

  • Glass

  • Batteries

  • Metal

  • Plastic

  • Tires

  • Aluminum

  • Steel

  • Tin

  • Paper Bags and More

  • Rubber

The amount of waste that can occur on a farm is significant, especially for the ones that are bigger and do a lot of production. It can make a big impact on the environment when recycling is done. If everyone works together and recycles what they can, the landfills and the environment can benefit.

Reuse

Have you ever thought about all the items that you throw away daily? The next time you throw something away, think about the other uses you may have for it. Can it be reused in any other way on the farm?

You can repurpose a large number of items that you purchase. Some of the most common suggestions of things you can reuse are:

  • Feed Buckets or Other Containers

  • Old Tires

  • Plastic Tote Bags

  • Propane Tanks

  • Gallon Drums

  • And So Much More

Reduce Purchases

It is so easy to over-purchase when buying things for your farm. You can reduce the number of purchases you make by keeping detailed inventory records. That way, you are not ordering items that you already have enough of.

When making purchase orders, you may forget how many you have of something without detailed inventory counts. You may think you might as well order items in bulk to save time, don’t reorder until you need the product. That way, it will also cut down on waste. If you know you use particular items often, then it is okay to buy in bulk.

Compost

A lot of farmers in many different fields use composting. This is a highly beneficial way to reduce the amount of waste you produce. The amount of waste produced each year is astronomical. If we can take some steps to help reduce that number, it can significantly affect our environment.

Not only is it good for the environment, but farmers can also benefit. It can reduce the amount of fertilizer and other products they need to purchase. It can enrich the soil that they are growing their crops in. Some of the many things that can be composted on a farm are:

  • Grass Clippings

  • Yard Waste

  • Weeds

  • Leaves

  • Straw

  • Hay

  • Vegetable Plant Scraps

  • Fruit Plant Scraps

  • Egg Shells

  • Animal Waste

  • Coffee Grounds

  • And More
